Delaware State Information

Delaware is the second smallest state covering 2,489 square miles. Appraise that again, roughly 100 miles long and 30 miles wide area that lies mostly on a low, flat coastal plain and void of major or varied land forms. However tiny, Delaware is situated such that it is part of two major land regions, the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Piedmont. "Delaware" is "Lord de la Warr", the recognized moniker of Sir Thomas West, Virginia Company's first governor. The Delaware River was named after the statesman; the State of Delaware in turn obtained its name from the river.

The colonization of Delaware points to some evidence of early Egyptian exploration, and then Sweden, Holland and England. In 1638, the Swedes establish the first settlement - called 'New Sweden' - and introduced the log cabin. The nation's first scheduled steam railroad began in New Castle in 1831.

Delaware is dubbed 'The First State' for being the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. That same year it adopted its motto - "Liberty and independence." Thomas Jefferson however has another impression of Delaware when he once compared the state to a "small but very valuable" diamond. "A 'jewel' among states due to its strategic location on the Eastern Seaboard," he enthused. Thus, Delaware is sometimes referred to as 'The Diamond State'.

Delaware's economy once thrived on flour production, even revolutionizing the industry with the invention of the automatic flour-milling machinery. Modern Delaware is the leading producer of chemicals in the country. The State is perceived to grant the most approving corporate laws, hence, more corporations opted to incorporate in Delaware than in any other state.
